A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is a 128-bit identifier that is practically unique across all systems. Version 4 UUIDs are randomly generated and have the format xxxxxxxx-xxxx-4xxx-yxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx.
UUID v4 uses random numbers, making collisions astronomically unlikely. The probability of generating a duplicate is about 1 in 2^122 (5.3 x 10^36).
UUID and GUID are essentially the same thing. GUID (Globally Unique Identifier) is Microsoft's term for UUID. They follow the same specification and format.
